Wim Wenders

Director of the Buena Vista Social Club documentary (1999) — Wim Wenders' film brought the rediscovered Cuban musical masters to global audiences and became the most watched Cuban music documentary ever made.

About

Wim Wenders is a German filmmaker known for Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, and several acclaimed music documentaries. He was invited to film Ry Cooder's 1996 sessions with veteran Cuban musicians in Havana, and the resulting documentary — Buena Vista Social Club (1999) — was nominated for an Academy Award and seen by audiences worldwide.

Wenders' approach to the documentary was characteristically humanist: he let the musicians speak for themselves, intercut concert footage with intimate personal moments, and framed the story as a rediscovery of both the musicians and the musical tradition they embodied. The film's global success had a significant impact on international awareness of Cuban music and Cuban dance culture.
